The technology behind solar photovoltaic systems has come a long way in recent years.

Since 1960 solar module efficiency has increased while the cost has dropped substantially. The average cost of solar cells has gone from $76.67 per watt down to $0.26 per watt. It’s no surprise we are hearing more and more about solar panel installations around the globe.

With an investment like this, you can feel good about doing your part for the planet.

Solar Panel Installation FAQs

Some very common questions we get about solar panels are:

  1. Will a solar system work on my house?
  2. How much will a system cost on my house?
  3. How long will it take to see a return on my investment?
  4. Will I be “OFF-GRID” when it comes to my electrical needs?
  5. How will I know how much power my system is generating?

1. Will a solar system work on my house?

When it comes to the design and installation of your photovoltaic system, some of the variables to consider are shadowing from nearby structures or vegetation, the azimuth and “open real-estate” of your roof top, as well as the pitch of your roof. These factors affect the design of your system and your exact ROI (return on investment).

In Calgary, Alberta, the ideal setting would be a large south-facing roof top with zero shadowing throughout the year and a pitch between 26-54 degrees.

2. How much will a system cost on my house?

If your home is ideally suited to solar panels (as described above) installation could cost anywhere between $10,000 to $20,000.

3. How long will it take to see a return on my investment?

You’ll achieve a return on your investment between 12-18 years. This factors in an incremental increase of about 3% on the cost of energy each year. You’re essentially paying for your electricity upfront for the next 15 years – but keep in mind that solar modules hold a manufacturer’s warranty of 25 years and are known to last even longer!

4. Will I be “OFF-GRID” when it comes to my electrical needs?

In most cases, if your home or business has an existing electrical service you will not be truly “OFF-GRID” with a solar photovoltaic system. But it’s actually better to stay attached to the grid.

Why? With a “GRID-TIED” system your home or business will use solar-generated power FIRST before it uses power from the utility service. If you create MORE power than your home or business demands, you will build a credit with your WSP (wire service provider). In other words, THEY PAY YOU!

The best part is not having to worry about any maintenance or control when your home is transitioning through these phases. It’s all automatic.

5. How will I know how much power my system is generating?

We can provide you with an app that allows you to monitor your system from your smartphone. You’ll be able to track your power generation, usage, and WSP credits by day, week, month, or lifetime.
